Handel’s Messiah

Directed by Daniel Oramas
Produced by Dan Dunlop, Rolando Salazar, Daniel Oramas

Rolando Salazar of the Atlanta Concert Opera approached Debonair Films with a problem: how to safely tackle the classic Christmas oratorio during a worldwide pandemic? It was a big ask, with full-sized broadcast requirements, COVID restrictions in place and a serious scheduling crunch: 48hrs for turnaround in post-production.

Background

When Dunlop Productions reached out to us, we couldn’t believe our ears. An opera performance? During a pandemic? The conductor of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Rolando Salazar was looking for production partners to take their traditional Christmas performance online into the bold new world of streaming pay-per-view. Dunlop would provide the streaming support and backend vendor services, while Debonair handled filming and post-production, while another partner, Walston Entertainment Group, would record, mix, and master the audio. We would record on a Monday and air the program two days later on Christmas eve. Not only that, but key elements of the Debonair team were going to be wrapping up another project in the Virgin Islands until the day before the scheduled show time, so we had to have everything arranged in advance. It was a shot of adrenaline that carried us through the holidays at the end of 2020.
